The conference will be held online on Wednesday 3 July 2024, and offers the opportunity to hear expert views and examine current topical issues relating to literacy, numeracy and dyslexia/SpLD.
Attendees will gain a 5-hour CPD attendance certificate (2 of which is SASC accredited) when attending this event.

Martin Bloomfield of York Associates has been leading on a European Union funded project called The Dyslexia Compass, a tool to “translate” dyslexia measurements and assessments across Europe. Here he tells us about the outcomes of his research.
Dyslexia knows no barriers. Or so we would like to think. It knows no borders, it knows no countries, and it knows no race. Dyslexia is neurological. Dyslexia is hereditary. Dyslexia is human. Dyslexia is neither political nor religious. Dyslexia is ethnically neutral. Or so we would like to think.
Consider the following question: if a child is dyslexic, is she dyslexic everywhere she lives? Can she “lose” her dyslexia when her parents simply move house to follow work, or to escape difficult socio-economic or political situations at home?
Natalie Houalla is a Senior Instructional Designer with Real Group and she is also the Chair of Governors as well as SEND and Inclusion Link Governor, for her local primary school. She is currently working towards an MA in Educational Neuroscience.
Here, Natalie explores the thorny issue of estimating the prevalence of dyslexia.
The question of prevalence in dyslexia is widely and consistently posed, and yet evades a decisive response.
Depending on which platform or resource you consult, you may come across answers as varied as, ‘from 3-5%’ to ‘1 in 5’ or a rounded ‘20%’. Currently, the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) states that 10% of the UK population are dyslexic, of which 4% are severely affected. However, the original source of these statistics is difficult to trace.

Specialist teacher training is much more than an understanding and management of dyslexia and literacy, diversity and inclusivity in learners. Qualified specialist teachers will have had access to a specific literacy programme.
These programmes will have provided a thorough training in the phonology and phonetics of the English language and a sound underpinning knowledge of language acquisition, morphology and syntax, semantics and the sociological dynamics of language. Knowledge that is informed by speech and language and communications therapies is built into comprehensive training courses that enable the practitioner to address the diverse literacy needs of any individual and provide appropriate remedial training. The Dyslexia Actional Literacy Programme (DALP) is one of these programmes.
