DAPP21-02: Specialist Literacy Teaching – Linking Theory to Practice

This module allows you to develop the complex and extensive skill-set needed to be an effective specialist literacy teacher/practitioner. It will instil the importance of the promotion of metalinguistic awareness and learner independence in literacy learning through teaching intervention planning, lesson planning and lesson delivery. You will also have the opportunity to further develop your expertise as a literacy specialist.

You will develop knowledge of a robust theoretical framework for supporting learners with dyslexia and co-occurring difficulties. Throughout, you will gain the insight needed to cultivate both foundational reading and spelling skills, as well as higher-order comprehension and writing abilities.

This module was developed and is delivered and assessed by Dyslexia Action, awarded by and quality assured by Middlesex University

  • Teaching Practice: This module requires access to appropriate learners to conduct literacy teaching interventions on, and access to an appropriate setting to conduct literacy teaching interventions in
  • Number of Credits: This module awards 30 masters level credits
  • Module Duration: This module runs for eight months.

Course Content

The course content includes:

  • A structured, multisensory teaching intervention programme which includes theoretical perspectives and practical skills
  • Selected readings on developing teaching practice
  • Placement process – developing skills in individualising teaching interventions for learners with different requirements
  • Interactive review and reflection on lesson plans and lesson delivery including self-evaluation of own practice (using video recordings)
  • Development of professional skills and responsibilities.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Plan specialist literacy support sessions tailored to meet an individual learner’s requirements
  2. Deliver a structured, multisensory literacy intervention programme that effectively addresses the individual study requirements of a learner with literacy-related difficulties
  3. Critically reflect on experiences of specialist literacy practice making links with theory and research.

How Will I Be Assessed?

Formative: (for example, could include but not be limited to)

  • Quizzes: comprehensive quizzes covering key module content
  • Case study analyses – to practise and reflect upon the literacy placement process
  • Literacy programme placement assignment: tutor reviewed to ensure the teaching intervention outline is appropriate for each learner
  • Observed Teaching Practice: digital recording of lesson delivery, lesson plan and teaching resources and students’ self-evaluation of performance submitted for in-depth tutor review
  • Teaching Skills Development Dialogue document (TSDD): compiled during the main (DALP-based) teaching practicum to capture student-tutor dialogue.

Summative:

Demonstration of specialist lesson planning and practical teaching: Submit a plan and digital recording of a structured, multisensory lesson to demonstrate competent practice.

Critical reflection on practice:

  • Analysis of own teaching practice using a ‘Performance Analysis Checklist’ and a digital recording of a lesson
  • Critical examination of the theory-base for structured, multisensory teaching with reference to own professional experience
  • Additional Teaching Diary: to demonstrate application of theory and skills developed during the module.

You will also:

  1. Complete of the given structured lesson plan template
  2. Submit a 60-90 minute recording of a teaching session (as appropriate)
  3. Write a reflection: 900-1100 words
  4. Produce a teaching diary

In order to pass the module, you will need to achieve an overall aggregate of 50% (grade 16) with a minimum of 50% (grade 16) in each assessment component.

Learning Materials

  • All essential reading materials that are required for the course are available to students, embedded within Campus Online. This may be as a journal article or extract from a key text, etc
  • The Dyslexia Action Literacy Programme (DALP) Main Manual, Version 6.1 is also included
  • There is no pre-reading available or required.

Free membership of The Dyslexia Guild

Candidates will automatically become student members of The Dyslexia Guild for the first year of their course while they are actively studying on a Postgraduate Certificate in Specialist Teaching, or Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Assessment and Teaching Programme with Dyslexia Action. The Guild is a membership network and professional association for practitioners in Dyslexia and SpLD, which aims to promote discussion, information and best practice as well as keep members informed of developments in the field through publication and distribution of topical news, updates and maintenance of an up-to-date library. 

The Guild provides its members with a wealth of information relating to dyslexia and SpLDs through its online library (the National Resource Centre for Dyslexia), a single-easy to access online platform that produces focused search results accessible by members 24/7. The library is supported by a Chartered Librarian and provides a unique, e-resource collection, covering the fields of dyslexia and other co-occurring difficulties. Participants have access to an online collection of over 800 specialist e-books, hard copy books and resources as well as simultaneous access to an online EBSCO database of over 1,600 full-text education and psychology journals.
