DAPP21-03: Psychometric Assessment of Literacy-Related Difficulties
This module will give you a grounding in key statistical concepts. You will explore the principles of psychometric assessment via in-depth knowledge and the use of a comprehensive standardised literacy assessment tool. You will become familiar with a reporting protocol for literacy-related difficulties, which lays the key foundations for your role as a specialist teacher-assessor.
This module was developed and is delivered and assessed by Dyslexia Action, awarded by and quality assured by Middlesex University.

- Number of Study Hours: This module requires 298 hours of independent study and 2 hours placement
- Psychometric tests (which are in addition to the course fees): There is a Study Purchase Scheme for key assessment test batteries operated by the Dyslexia Action Shop
- Access to appropriate learners: to conduct psychometric tests on and access to an appropriate setting to conduct psychometric tests in
- Number of Credits: This module awards 30 masters level credits.
- Module Duration: This module runs for six months.
Module content includes:
- Introduction to psychometric assessment (basic statistics)
- Introduction to assessment administration and scoring
- Familiarisation with a complex, co-normed assessment battery for appraising literacy skills
- Working within a set assessment report format to appraise literacy skills
- Qualitative information – its contribution to interpretation in assessments
- Analysis of written output
- Using reflective models and structured self-evaluation materials to improve professional performance
- Evaluating professional skills and responsibilities
- AI literacy and ethics for specialist assessors.
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Accurately process and interpret statistical and psychometric information relevant to the context
- Compile a critical evaluation of administration practice that demonstrates a grasp of psychometric assessment commensurate with this stage of training
- Construct an assessment report that effectively appraises literacy-related difficulties
- Critically reflect on experiences of report-writing in order to refine future professional practice.
Formative: (for example, could include but not be limited to)
- Quizzes: comprehensive quizzes covering key statistical content for practice of score calculation, key concept retention etc
- Informal administration of a relevant assessment battery with a family member or colleague – reflection on what has been learnt via a forum
- Case study – sifting evidence to explain/interpret performance
- Observed Administration: digital recording of assessment administration, score sheets etc. and students’ self-evaluation of performance submitted for in-depth tutor review.
Summative:
Literacy-related Assessment Report (for example): Construct a professional literacy-related assessment report, 3,500 words
Critical reflection on practice (for example):
- A recording of a test administration
- An administration self- evaluation checklist
- An evaluation of strengths and areas for development in test administration
- Reflect upon own practice in report-writing and areas for future development.
In order to pass the module, you will need to achieve an overall aggregate of 50% (grade 16) with a minimum of 50% (grade 16) in each assessment component.
- All essential reading materials that are required for the course are available to students, embedded within Campus Online. This may be as a journal article or extract from a key text, etc
- There is no pre-reading available or required.
Membership of The Dyslexia Guild
The Dyslexia Guild is a membership network and professional association for practitioners in Dyslexia and SpLD, which aims to promote discussion, information and best practice as well as keep members informed of developments in the field through publication and distribution of topical news, updates and maintenance of an up-to-date library.
The Guild provides its members with a wealth of information relating to dyslexia and SpLDs through its online library (the National Resource Centre for Dyslexia), a single-easy to access online platform that produces focused search results accessible by members 24/7. The library is supported by a Chartered Librarian and provides a unique, e-resource collection, covering the fields of dyslexia and other co-occurring difficulties. Participants have access to an online collection of over 800 specialist e-books, hard copy books and resources as well as simultaneous access to an online EBSCO database of over 1,600 full-text education and psychology journals.
