Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Principles:

Dyslexia Action Professional programme is a competency-assessed course at Level 7, Master’s level, which requires tutor assessment of the candidate undertaking teaching and assessment. This means that other academic programmes that have not included competency-assessment or are at a lower level (e.g. Level 5 or Level 6) will not qualify for APL.

Relevance:

The completed course had learning outcomes which reflect the content of a module(s) within the MEd Professional Practice in Dyslexia and Literacy Programme (see advertised outcomes). The learning objectives from the completed course will need to be evidenced through documents outlining a detailed syllabus/course content. It is the responsibility of applicants to provide evidence of their qualifications and course content.

Evidence for recognition of prior learning (relevance + level) may include:

  • a copy of the qualification achieved
  • a detailed transcript with credits and marks achieved
  • information on the course content (programme specification, course handbook or other official documentation)
  • Evidence of an ENIC report where non-UK qualifications are included

Recent completion:

Credits must have been completed within the past 5 years.

Academic credits at Level 7/Masters:

Recent and relevant qualifications from all other Higher Education Institutions (UK/EU or International) will be considered. Where the credits were awarded from an overseas provider, costs are likely to be incurred by the applicant for ENIC equivalence checking.

We do not consider “prior experiential learning” or qualifications where no academic credit has been awarded, even if the qualification is said to be “equivalent to” a certain number of credits or named postgraduate award.

Restrictions:

Level 7 credits from previously completed modules or PGCert or PGDip awards cannot be used in more than one RPL / transfer of credit application. Applicants will need to confirm that completed modules or awards have never been included in another award, or transferred to another Masters level programme at another institution.

Transfer of Credits:

A maximum of two-thirds of the credits for any final exit award can be obtained through APL or transfer of credit. Therefore, delegates will need to consider the intended exit point from the Postgraduate Programme, i.e.:

  • A delegate intending to exit the Dyslexia Action Masters level programme with 60 credits (a PGCert) can have a maximum of 30 credits included by APL.
  • A delegate intending to exit the Dyslexia Action Masters level programme with 120 credits (a PGDip) can have a maximum of 60 credits included by APL.
  • A delegate intending to exit the Dyslexia Action Masters level programme with 180 credits (an MEd) can have a maximum of 120 credits included by APL.

Please note: The Dyslexia Action Postgraduate Programme has 30 credit modules, and we can only accept the transfer of credit where the previous credit value is equal to or greater than the value of our equivalent module/s. e.g. 20 credits could not be transferred in on their own, 40 credits could be transferred in, but as equivalent to one 30 credit module.

Credits that have already been used towards an award (PGCert, PGDip, Masters etc.) cannot be brought in separately, as credits can only be used toward one current award; previous awards that are transferred in are relinquished.

Applications will be considered by the programme APL team which includes the Programme Leader, Deputy Programme Leader, and the Middlesex University Link Tutor.

Any queries about APL applications should be sent to pgmail@dyslexiaction.org.uk along with your application form.
